A little bit about me.....

Jimmy H. Copeland III was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His father, a now retired Army Lt. Colonel/Psychologist and his mother, a Social Worker, encouraged their son to take advantage of their military lifestyle to see the world and to embrace diversity through culture and education.

Educated at Texas A & M University-Commerce, Mr. Copeland received his Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Communications and his Masters’ Degree in Secondary Higher Education. Certified by the State of Texas in Special Education, Mr. Copeland current works for the U.S. Department of Justice as a Special Education Coordinator for the Federal Prison System.

The recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his leadership ability and community involvement, Mr. Copeland is also a public speaker. He currently resides in Texas with his wife, Tiffany, a professional photographer, and their two children.

Jim is the oldest in the family. He has a younger brother named Daniel Copeland.  Daniel Copeland is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University.  He currently is a 1st Lieutenant serving in the military stationed in Iraq.  Daniel is a former collegiate athlete, and is Jim's hero.

The High School and College Years

I played College Football at Texas A& M University-Commerce.  I played Free Safety.  While there I was very involved in student orginizations.  I was the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Evangel Leader for the Baptist Student Ministry, and founder of the Brotherhood.  The Brotherhood was a group of men, who believed in living with character and integrity.

I played Football and ran track in High School.  I ran the 400 meter dash.  I was a Texas Regional Finalist in this event in 1996.  I also played Varsity Football at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton Texas.  I was a member of the Future Teachers of American in High School.  I was the receipient of the Towne North Bank Mayors Scholarship for the City of Carrollton Texas.

The Educator

Today, I am the Special Learning Needs Coordinator for the Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons.  I take pride in helping adults obtain their GED.  My primary focus is helping those adults who may have a learning disablility.  I am certified in Special Education (Early Childhood-12th grade).  I have had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of disabilities including but not limited to, Emotional Disturbance, Mental Retardation, Aspergers Syndrom, Autism, Tramautic Brain Injury, Learning Disabilities, just to name a few.  I found my strength was in working with students in a Structured Classroom Setting.  The students I primairily served in this setting belonged within a Behavior Classroom.  I taught in the Public School Sysem for 2 years.  I taught in a lower income setting.  I noticed that the students were having trouble in the classroom, and when I addressed the parents, they didn't know how to help their students. A lot of the parents had been incarcerated.  I decided that if I helped the parents, then I can help the students. So I took a job teaching within the Federal Government.  I provide trainings for staff at my institution and it is our goal to encourage education and keep our communities safe.
